We do not for sure the exact criteria that search engines go by when they crawl sites and rank them. However, there are some pointer that anyone can logically follow or avoid, such as posting links on known link farms or splogs. It doesn't really need an insider to learn this.

This article from MSN.com gives us some pointers on how you can index your website--and index them well.
